Welcome to Settling The Score
Every project has its origin story. Here's why you should follow Settling The Score.
If you had asked me 10 years ago if I’d ever be running my own blog, I’d have laughed you out of the room.
In 2013, I had just enrolled at Virginia Tech and was set on being the next great sports reporter. I was in love with sports journalism. After all, what 19-year-old sports enthusiast wouldn’t be in love with being paid to attend sporting events and write about them?
Fast forward to now, and I’m fortunate to have carved out a career as a communications professional outside of journalism. Sports journalism, and media in general, has changed a lot since 2013 and not for the better. Reputable publications are hemorrhaging readers, forcing massive cuts to staffs across the country. Rather than idolizing objective reporters and seasoned analysts, many of the most successful and revered sports media personalities are hot-take machines, hell-bent on saying the most outlandish thing they can think of.
What’s needed in media, both in sports and across the spectrum, is reason and logic. Talking about sports should be a simple process — identify the question or conflict, gather the facts and data, interpret those facts and data and then form it into a conclusion.
What isn’t needed is another brash talking-head that carries water for those he or she writes about. There are enough fanboys writing about their favorite team.
Sports media needs balance, and that’s what Settling The Score aims to achieve. On this site, no opinion will go unjustified by logic and reasoning. I won’t always be correct, but I can promise that I’ll always try be fair and honest.
You’ll get an objective take on matters of the day, which will focus primarily on Virginia Tech athletics and college athletics in general. And you’ll get it all for free, because this is a passion of mine, not my career.

On Twitter, @matejS247 noted the Hokies have now:
~ Have 3 Top-10 VA Recruits for 1st time since 2017
~ Have 4 Four-Stars for 1st time since 2019
~ All 5 in-state commits are Top-25 VA Recruits
Coming off a 3-win season. As noted Hokie fans Buffalo Springfield once sang, "Something's happening here..."
